Bicycle Vacation Guide: Minnesota & Wisconsin
Published in Paperback by Little Transport Pr (February, 1998)
Authors: Doug Shidell, Shannon Brady, and Vicky Vogels
Average review score:

Complete information on Minnesota and Wisconsin Rail Trails
Sharp maps, all of them are four color. The authors even included maps of the towns along the trail. Nice for finding trail heads and local parks.
They included a lot of tourist type information like lodging, camping, local festivals and events and other activities for when you aren't on the bike. The road loops are a nice touch. Ride one way on the trail, then return on a road.

Big Bill Thompson, Chicago and the Politics of Image
Published in Paperback by Univ of Illinois Pr (Trd) (January, 1998)
Author: Douglas Bukowski
Average review score:

After 70 years, an objective account
Big Bill Thompson has been a political whipping boy ever since he failed to win re-election as Chicago mayor in the 1930s. Subsequent books on Thompson were written by supporters who wished to praise, detractors who wished to condemn or journalists who just wanted to tell a good story. But finally, after 70 years, an objective account has been written of Big Bill Thompson together with the intricate details of the prevailing political climate in Chicago before, during and after the Roaring Twenties.

Learn about the Big Bill Thomson who inherited his money from lucky parents who owned the one section of Chicago which did not burn in the Great Fire of 1871.

Learn about the Big Bill Thompson who was one of the most celebrated athletes in late 19th century Chicago.

Learn about the Big Bill Thompson who as a cowboy turned a profit on his ranch while Teddy Roosevelt was losing money on his.

Learn about a Mayor Thompson who championed an "America First" policy while exploiting class envy for his own political gain.

The reader is left with the impression that Big Bill Thompson invented the type of politics in use today. Rather than focus on Thompson himself, however, the book also explores the campaigns of his opposition, leaving the reader with a full understanding of what worked for Thompson and why it worked.

The scandal involving contributions from gangsters which effectively ended his career is given the space it deserves at the end of the book, but is not the focus of the book, as are most contemporary news stories. The reader is left with a well-rounded and objective account of one of the most successful mayors in Chicago history -- and how he got there.

And as the final coup de grace at the conclusion of the book, the reader will undoubtedly be shocked when they realize that Big Bill Thompson never committed half the indiscretions attributed to Big Bill Clinton.

All in all, it was an excellent and enlightening read. Thoroughly enjoyable.

Big Cats
Published in Hardcover by Whittet Books Ltd (May, 1994)
Authors: Douglas Richardson and Doug Richardson
Average review score:

Big Cats
Handy little book with wonderful drawings and photos depicting big cats in action. Tiger, lion, jaguar, cougar, cheetah and all leopards and their subspecies are described in individual chapters, including conservation and behavior issues in the wild and in captivity. It is supplemented by many interesting tidbits, such as different coat patterns and colorations. The author, Douglas Richardson got his first Zoo job at Edinburgh in UK, and he is currently a director of the Rome Zoo. He argues, successfully, that some animals might have to exist purely in captivity unless or until safe habitats are assured for them in the wild. The role of a modern Zoo is to act as a reserve of a healthy genetic populations for the future to avoid the extinction of species.

Big Game Trails in the Far North

Authors: Phillip F. Neuweiler and Douglas G. Lapasta
Average review score:

Written just as Phil spoke
Phil Neuweiler was my Dad. He loved hunting and Alaska hunts were his favorite. Doug LaPasta did an excellent job of putting together the notes my dad kept while ill and the book reads as my father spoke. It is a wonderful tribute to the favorite stories and advice that depict the hunts and events my dad experienced during his many years as a big game hunter.

The Birds and where to find them in the Blue Ridge
This book is an all-around treasure, for the beginning birder or the experienced ornitholigist, living in or near the Blue Ridge, planning to visit the Appalachian region, or even simply interested in this world-class region. The first fifty pages constitute an introduction to the Appalachian province and birding in general. The rest of the book profiles the birds of over 300 locations, where to go to see them, and how to get there. The book contains over two dozen maps, and even information about birding spots with handicapped access; an annotated checklist of birds; and a guide to contacts and resources for particular areas. It also features the drawings of H. Douglas Pratt. Part travel guide, part natural history, part handbook, this book is above all a joy.

Black Islanders: A Personal Perspective of Bougainville, 1937-1991
Published in Paperback by University of Hawaii Press (January, 1992)
Author: Douglas L. Oliver
Average review score:

good for a comprehensive over view of Bougainville
There are few books available to gain an understanding of modern (prior to 1989) Bougainvillian history.

The author is an anthropologist who spent time in mainly the South west (Siwai) in the 1930's and episodically since.

His review of the island's history, geography and culture is good and thorough. He presents interesting insights into the reasons for the crisis and some of the different groups and players, but not in great detail.

He could be regarded as biased because he worked for Bougainville Copper in the 70's and ? 1980's. However the book seems quite independant in its stance and it is likely that his prior association with the mining company is mainly responsible for him not expanding a bit more in this area.

It is not really dated and this is an indication of how useful a book it is.

Overall this is a must to read before visiting Bougainville, which is a very pleasant place as are the people.
